November 2013 - Going on Holidays?

During the school holidays and more particularly at this time of year many folk take a break and get away for a holiday.

The following are some simple tips to help reduce the risk of a break-in whilst you are holidaying…
  • Secure all doors and windows before leaving.
  • Lock all garden tools and ladders away securely so they cannot be used to break into your home.
  • Turn your telephone and doorbell volume down to low. Never leave a holiday message on your answering machine.
  • Turn off unnecessary appliances
  • Use timer switches to turn on lights and radios
  • Cancel all regular deliveries
  • Leave your curtains and blinds partially open to create doubt whether you are at home or not.
  • Ask your trusted neighbours to keep an eye on your property. If you have an alarm, tell them what to do if the alarm is activated. Perhaps they might park their car in your driveway.
  • Take all spare keys with you
  • Arrange collection of mail from your letterbox
  • Have junk mail collected daily
  • Have your rubbish bins put out and brought in on the correct day by your neighbour or friend
  • Leave emergency contact details with your trusted neighbour and ask them to report any suspicious activity to police.
