February 2016 - Area Coordinators intro

Happy New Year, one & all!!

I am beyond amazed that we are already into February… And I thought last year flew by too fast….
The year is flying by and we are well and truly into storm season. Ready or not - the high temperatures and high humidity levels are the perfect ingredients for storms, and their variable natural consequences…

The State Government & RACQ have again partnered via the “Get Ready” campaign to inform Queenslanders about simple precautions that could reduce the risks associated with natural disasters. This newsletter contains some simple checklists from the campaign that may assist all of us to plan & prepare. Frighteningly, RACQ research indicates well over one third of Queenslanders are unprepared for storms & cyclones and the same number don’t know what to do if their home or surrounds is threatened by bushfires.

For more information on how to protect yourself or loved one against natural disasters, visit the website www.getready.qld.gov.au.

You may notice that we have a new meeting time and a new meeting location for the meeting later this month. Support for our Neighbourhood Watch Group is waning – we are having an evening meeting on the northern side of the mountain in a bid to encourage your attendance. NHW is a community effort aimed at benefiting all who live on our beautiful mountain. Please show your support if you have the time to do so.

Until the next newsletter, stay safe!

Anne Carrigan-Harrip - Area Coordinator

November 2015 - Area Coordinators Intro

It’s AGM time again….and I do mean again!!

At our last meeting – in August 2015 - the official AGM – an insufficient quorum of attendees at the meeting meant that we could not hold our intended AGM.

This was a disappointing outcome given that Neighbourhood Watch is a community group whose mission is to assist the local community, raise awareness of matters pertaining to our community and the safety thereof, and to operate with the support of our local Police & community. Our shared vision is for a safer community and it is only with your continued support and vigilance that we can live in safe surroundings.

So – we will be holding our AGM at our next meeting on November 25 and I urge anyone from our community that can attend to do so.

The positions of Area Coordinator, Asst Area Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor will all be declared vacant. If there are residents that would be interested in being involved and in holding a position within our organisation please come along to the meeting and put your name forward.

We welcome all residents and appreciate fresh ideas!

Wishing one and all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and fulfilling New Year.

Until the next newsletter, stay safe!

Anne Carrigan-Harrip - Area Coordinator

NHW AGM and Councillors Brief

The 2015 NHW Annual General Meeting was a rather short affair, without the numbers to form a quorum.

Scenic Rim Councillors Nadia O'Carrol(Division 2) and Nigel Waistell(Division 1) were to attend to give a short briefing on local council matters, but had to give their apologies as they were attending a briefing on the new draft planning scheme.

In their stead, Nadia and Nigel provided a written briefing which is available in PDF format: Neighbourhood Watch Meeting Wed 26 Aug - Councillors Brief.pdf

(Note that this document is as it was provided, without modification other than conversion to PDF).

Getting to school safely

How to prepare your child to walk or bike ride safely to school and back

It is that time of the year when our children are back to school. In some cases walking or riding a bike is the best option to get to school. While this can be fun for your child, you still have to feel assured they are safe while doing it. If you are allowing your children to walk or ride to and from school then here are a few quick tips to help keep them safe.

  • Choose the safest route possible. It is a great idea to practice riding or walking to school with your child. While on the practice run look out for the hazard spots and then decide which would be the safest route for your child to take.

  • Teach your child to only cross at intersections. Show your child the intersections to cross at and to always look both ways before crossing. Make sure they always use a pedestrian crossing as a priority point to cross any road.

  • Arrange for your child to walk with a buddy or as part of an organised walking school bus. It can be fun to walk with a friend, or with an organised walking school bus. It also helps everyone feel more safe.

  • Never get into a strangers car. Make sure you advise your child to never talk to strangers and never get into a strangers car.

  • Always obey traffic signs and lights. Traffic lights are there to keep you safe.

  • Reassure your child daily. Discuss the route your child will take to school daily. This allows your child to have a clear understanding of what is happening for his/her trip to and from school.

  • Have a family password. As a family decide on a secret word, that is only known by your family and is easy to remember. If plans change and a friend was to pick up your child, then they would need to disclose the family password before your child went with them. This allows your child to feel safe with the new arrangements.

New way to report minor traffic crashes in Queensland from January 1, 2015

From January 1, 2015, motorists who are involved in a minor crash will have the opportunity to report the incident via the Policelink smart phone app or online instead of waiting for police to attend.

Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said the new reporting via Policelink, would allow motorists to continue their journey without waiting for police.
“In 2010, a Queensland Police Service report estimated about 73,000 officer hours were dedicated, each year, to responding to non-injury crashes,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Keating said.
“By making amendments to our policy we will be able to reduce these hours allowing officers to respond to more urgent matters.”
However police will still be required to attend traffic crashes that involve any of the following circumstances:
  • Death or injury (injury requiring medical treatment by a qualified paramedic, nurse or doctor);
  • Suspected involvement of drugs or alcohol;
  • Driver has failed or is refusing to provide required details;
  • A hazardous environment or threat to public safety exists, including congestion;
  • Impairment/disability (a driver with an impairment or disability requires police assistance); or
  • Other situations where discretion would determine it was in the public interest to attend and/or investigate.
“Motorists still need to report a crash to the Queensland Police Service where any party involved is injured or killed (injury requiring treatment) a driver fails to provide their details and/or a vehicle involved in the crash requires towing,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Keating said.
“However, where a non-injury traffic crash occurs that does not require police investigation, members of the public are able to report these by downloading the Policelink smart phone app, completing a form online via the Policelink website or by calling Policelink on 131 444.”
The Policelink Smart phone app can be downloaded from the App store by searching “Policelink”. After the information has been collected motorists will be issued a report number that can be used for insurance purposes.
