February 2014 - Police News

So what has been happening about the Mountain and surrounds recently?

We have been very busy, which you probably wouldn’t expect seeing that the current strength of the North Tamborine Police Station is now seven Police officers (up two from previously) and one administration officer. But we are still under our authorised strength! I have been informed by Acting Sergeant Steve Hargreaves that one more Police officer is due to be posted from the Gold Coast to the Mountain in the near future - eight Police officers will be permanently posted to the Mountain, meaning that we have the staffing capacity to roster officers to work every day from 8am to 10pm as a minimum and often well beyond these timings, independent of our colleagues at Canungra.

Canungra Police station, likewise, will roster the same as us. At the present time Canungra Police station who we will continue to have close ties with, is running at its full strength of eight Police officers and an administration officer, they also have a new Officer in Charge (OIC) Sergeant Craig Roberts who has recently arrived from Far North Queensland.

Many readers, out and about late Saturday night and early Sunday morning would have been aware of the large Police presence in the vicinity of Bateke Rd, Prospect St, Biano Rd, Wilson Rd and Young St. Police crews from Canungra, Jimboomba, Beaudesert, Logan Detectives, Tactical Crime Unit, District duty officers, Dog squad and even the Police air wing (POLAIR – helicopter) assisted us search for and later locate a male person who was attempting to flee from a North Tamborine Police crew. This male person was wanted initially in relation to a dangerous driving offence on Main Western Rd. The male driver of that blue coloured Holden sedan it will be alleged went on to commit numerous dangerous driving offences and evade Police offences. He was subsequently located by a Police dog and arrested by its handler, whilst trying to hide in scrubland off Young St. The male had totally destroyed his own car in the process of evading Police. The car has been towed and impounded for a period of 90 days in line with new legislation and the male person having been handcuffed and searched was subsequently transported to the Beenleigh Watchhouse and processed and charged with numerous offences. The male person remains in custody at the direction of the Magistrate and will face the court at a future date in relation to these and other serious matters.

We would like to thank members of the public who assisted us on the night and others who have since come forward to give us information about how the alleged offender was conducting himself before Police came across him on Main Western Rd.

But on the whole local Police have been busy with the normal events that occur on and about the mountain and I would suggest occasionally in all Police divisions across Queensland, such as traffic crashes and traffic offences, drunk and drugged drivers, domestic violence situations, keep the peace jobs, dealing with people with mental health concerns, cautioning juveniles and attempting to set them on the right path, reuniting people with lost property (there are two unclaimed bicycles at the station), liaising with other emergency service workers be it Fire Fighters, Paramedics and sometimes the SES. We are dealing with people in need, people in grief, witnesses and victims, young people and older people, people who need us and people who don’t want us anywhere near them. We do what we do on behalf of the community, hoping for the best outcomes, in the best way we know how.

Please stay safe and beware school has started, so watch out for the kids on the roads and adhere to 40km/hr in school zones and also parking restrictions.
