November 2014 - Police News

I am glad to introduce myself as the newest member of North Tamborine Police Station. I am Senior Constable Ben McANANY and I have been appointed as the new NHW Police Liaison Officer.

I have previously worked on the Gold Coast, predominantly at Coolangatta Police Station, for approximately 5 years. Since being transferred to the mountain, I have noticed the difference in policing, which is strongly reinforced by the community’s cooperation and support. It is the community looking after each other by means of reporting suspicious behaviour via social media or direct to police that allows us to react to incidents in a timely manner. It is this sort of neighbourly vigilance that sets apart the mountain from my previous more populated division. It is a fantastic place to raise my young family with amazing schooling and supportive people, and as such I have a vested interest, as do we all, to protect our community.

In the past 3 months, there have been a number of Break and Enters(7), in which a few of these offences were through insecure dwellings. Approaching summer it is vital that people are vigilant in closing and locking doors and windows when leaving your home. Most thieves are opportunists and will scout premises for easy access opportunities. I would encourage everyone to continue reporting any suspicious persons and vehicles - in some cases they pose as a service provider/ salesman.

If you are going away for an extended period please contact the police station as we have a register where we can do patrols of your property whilst you are away.

One of the more serious recent incidents to occur was a robbery at a dwelling in which offenders used violence to steal belongings from the home owner.

This is a timely reminder that crimes like this can, and will, occur on the mountain without rhyme or reason.
Always be aware of people that you associate with and what information that may be given to unknown persons regarding money or property of value and security arrangements.

Do not hesitate to call the station(5545 3473) at any time of the day or night to report crime or suspicious activity.

If we are not in the station to answer the call you will be directed to our communications centre where a car crew will be tasked to attend the job.

In emergencies please call 000.

Please remember to use Policelink 131 444 for all non-urgent crime reports.

As we approach summer we often have a spike in crime, but there is also an increase in cars on the road and with this an increase in road trauma. Please be safe on the roads, especially when the roads become wet after a long period without rain.

I hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas.

S/C Ben McANANY – NHW Liaison Officer.
