Shocking new figures have confirmed
what many of us already know - the majority of motorists do not know how to
correctly indicate on roundabouts.
The RACQ audited several roundabouts
across Brisbane, including Sunnybank, and also at Nambour on the Sunshine
Coast, and found more than 60 per cent failed to pass the test.
Most Brisbane drivers don't know how use a
roundabout
About 800 motorists were counted as
part of the research.
RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said
it was worrying how many motorists failed to get the basics correct.
"We audited multiple roundabout
sites across Brisbane and it's clear most drivers just don't get it," Ms
Ritchie said.
"Indicating is the main means of
communication between motorists and when you don't communicate well, accidents
can happen."
Ms Ritchie said the study found some
drivers were copying the behaviour of the car in front, even if they were
indicating incorrectly.
Other drivers either indicated
incorrectly or did not indicate at all.
Ms Ritchie said the survey was a
reminder for all Queenslanders to check they understood the rules.
"Indicating incorrectly may
appear to be a minor traffic infringement but it can have a huge impact while
you're out on the road, especially to frustration levels of other
motorists," she said.
Failing to signal properly on
roundabouts can lead to a $73 fine and two demerit points.
For the record, Queensland road rules
require motorists to indicate before entering a roundabout if proceeding
immediately left, going right or performing a U-turn.
Drivers are always required to indicate left when
exiting a roundabout.
