Crime statistics at Queenslanders' fingertips
Queenslanders will soon have crime statistics available at their fingertips with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Online Crime Statistics Portal announced by Police Minister Jack Dempsey and Police Commissioner Ian Stewart.
Mr
Dempsey said from this afternoon Queenslanders will be able to access
crime statistics for their street, suburb, postcode, local government
area, neighbourhood watch area or police region, district or division in
a matter of moments.
“The
portal is another example of the State Government’s commitment to open
data and is in addition to crime data already available through the QPS
website,” Mr Dempsey said.
“It
allows Queenslanders easy access to what is happening in their
neighbourhood from their desktop computer, smart phone or tablet.”
Commissioner Stewart said the portal was set to revolutionise the way the public has access to crime information.
“Users
can key in a suburb, street name or post code and select a specific time
period or choose an offence and hit search,” Commissioner Stewart said.
“An area
map will appear with icons or clusters that represent where the crimes
occurred, what type of offences they were and if they are solved or
unsolved.
“Data on the screen can show selections as hot spots or can be shown in graph format.”
The data contained in the portal dates back 13 years and is updated on a nightly basis being one week in arrears.
“For example if you did a search today (Thursday) the most recent information will be as at Thursday last week,” he said.
The
portal was developed in-house. One of the aims of the portal is to
encourage users to become familiar with their area and engage in
appropriate crime prevention strategies and partner with police to
ensure a safer community.
“The portal will go a long way to assist the prevention of crime,” he said.
